Facts about Trees
Oxygen
- During the process of photosynthesis, trees take in carbon dioxide and produce the oxygen we breathe
- A human breathes 7 or 8 trees worth of oxygen each year
- A mature leafy tree produces as much oxygen in a season as 10 people inhale in a year
- A 100-foot tree, 18 inches diameter at its base, produces 6,000 pounds of oxygen.
Animals
- 2.3 million animals live in a single tree
- Deforestation leads to the deaths of about 77 billion animals & insects each year
- 9.1 million mammals
- 10.7 million birds
- 67.1 million reptiles
- According to recent estimates, the world is losing 137 species of plants, animals and insects every day to deforestation
- Scientists estimate that 150-200 species of plant, insect, bird and mammal become extinct every 24 hours
- 50,000 species become extinct each year due to deforestation
- The Sumatran Rhinos, Sumatran tiger, Sun Bear, Pygmy Elephant, and proboscis Monkey and Orangutans all face extinction because of deforestation and poaching.
The Amazing Root Bridges You Have To See To Believe!
Environmental
- Trees contribute directly to the environment by providing oxygen, improving air quality, climate amelioration, conserving water, preserving soil, and supporting wildlife
- Trees help to control climate by moderating the effects of the sun, rain and wind
- Leaves absorb and filter the sun’s radiant energy, keeping things cool in summer
- Trees preserve warmth by providing a screen from harsh wind
- In addition to influencing wind speed and direction, they shield us from the downfall of rain, sleet and hail
- Trees help to control climate by moderating the effects of the sun, rain and wind
- Trees lower the air temperature and reduce the heat intensity of the greenhouse effect by maintaining low levels of carbon dioxide
- According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, “One acre of forest absorbs six tons of carbon dioxide and puts out four tons of oxygen. This is enough to meet the annual needs of 18 people
- Trees, shrubs and turf filter air by removing dust and absorbing other pollutants like carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide. After trees intercept unhealthy particles, rain washes them to the ground
- Using a mature sycamore tree as an example 100kg of oxygens created per tree per year.
Random
- There are four country with no forest San Marino, Qatar, Greenland and Oman.
- Qatar doesn’t have a single tree
- A primary motivation to explore the new world was to find more trees as they had become scarce on the European continent.
- The people of Easter Island used every single tree on the island
- Archaeologists indicate the most ancient pieces of paper ever collected were from China from the 2nd century BCE.
- It takes at least 1,000 years for a shihuahuaco tree to grow to its maximum height of 40m
- shihuahuaco can sequester 40 tons of carbon.
- One acre of the kenaf plant produces as much fibre in one year as 20 acres of yellow pine

Tree Loss
What are the causes of deforestation?
- Farming
- Livestock
- Drilling
- Mining
- Wildfires
- Urban Sprawl
- Paper Production
- Palm Oil Production
- More than 200,000 acres of rainforest are burned every day
- The world’s rainforests are currently disappearing at a rate of 6000 acres every hour (4000 football fields worth every hour)
- 2016, the world lost tree cover over an area almost as large as Italy, 73.4 million acres.
- A team of researchers led by experts from the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies estimates the world will run out of trees in 300 years

Wildfires
- 6 million acres or 900 million harvestable trees were lost in the wildfires of 2020 across Oregon, Washington and California.
- 9 million acres of trees were lost in 2018
- 10 million acres of trees were lost in 2017
- Adding in the lost inventory of lumber mills the wildfires account for the loss of enough trees to build 23 million average American homes
- The lumber lost in wildfires from 2017 – 2020 would have replaced every home, apartment and condo in the US.
Facts about Recycled Paper
- Paper can be recycled 5 to 7 times
- Recycling 1 ton of paper can prevent 17 trees from being cut down.
- If it’s recycled seven times, it saves 117 trees.

How many trees are on Earth?
- A new study published in Nature estimates the planet has 3.04 trillion trees
- This research says 15.3 billion trees are chopped down every year
- 15.3 billion trees equals 3000 rolls of toilet paper for each person
- It also estimates that 46% of the world’s trees have been cleared over the past 12,000 years

How many trees are cut down each day?
- 2.47 million trees are cut down each day
- One football field worth of forest is cut down every second
- The research by Nature says 15.3 billion trees are chopped down every year.
- As of 2020, the UN estimates the planet is losing about 7,000,000 hectares per year to deforestation.
Forest Lost by Continent
- Africa – 3.2 million hectares
- Asia – 1.1 million hectares
- Oceania – 200,000 hectares
- Europe – Due to excellent forest management, Europe did not net a loss of natural forestland in 2015 (the 2020 report has not yet been released)
- North America – 780,000 hectares
- South America – 3.6 million hectares
How many trees are planted?
- 7,000 trees are planted every second
- 420,000 trees are planted every minute
- 25.2 million trees are planted every hour
- 630 million trees are planted every day
How many Trees does it take….
It’s not easy to determine how many trees it takes to make an item.
Although we’re going with the best available statistics, determining how many trees are needed to make a particular item is difficult. Due to the difference in the size and shape of the trees, most mathematicians prefer to use the volume of wood in calculating how many of a certain item a tree can produce. Some factors could affect the mass of the wood thus changing the number of items produced.
One of the factors that can affect the mass of the wood is the drying which reduces its moisture content.According to engineering toolbox, when a piece of wood is dried and the moisture content reduces by 20%, the weight reduces by approximately 50%.
Another factor that affects the mass of the wood is the type of tree, as different trees produce wood of different mass. Taking these factors into consideration, calculating the number of items a tree can produce is exceptionally difficult.
So, keep in mind the numbers given here shouldn’t be considered exact and can fluctuate, these are extremely educated estimates. Now, after that little speed bump for clarity, on with the list.

How Many Trees Does it take to build a house?
When calculating how many trees it takes to build a house, we’ll consider an average mature fir or pine tree with a height of 80’ and a diameter of 2’.
- Each Mature tree needs 6 decades to reach 80′
- The average American home is 2600 square feet
- One mature tree has a lumber yield of about 754 board feet.
- 16,380 board feet are needed to frame the average home
- 22 mature trees will be needed to frame the average home
- Another 22-24 trees will be needed for the rest of the house and its finishes. Including cabinets, flooring, siding, roofing etc.
- In total it takes 44 mature trees to build an average American home of 2600 square feet
- 44 mature trees represent 2,640 tree/years of growth.
- To be available today, these trees must have begun growing just after World War II
- The average wood deck last 10 – 15 years

How Many Trees does it take to make toilet paper
- One tree makes 100 pounds or 1500 rolls of toilet paper
- Data suggest roughly 80,000 to 160,000 trees are cut down each day

How Many Trees does it take to make paper
- 24 trees to make 1 ton of paper
- 1 ton of paper is about 200,000 sheets
- The 24 trees would have to be a combination of soft and hardwoods
- The 24 trees also need to each be about 40 feet tall with a diameter of roughly 6-8 inches
- Data indicates that the production of 1 ton of paper contaminates nearly 20,000 gallons of water.
- In the United States, paper industries accounted for roughly 20% of the air pollution in 2015.
- In 2015, the Canadian government estimated that the nation’s paper industry accounted for 5% the waste disposed into the nation’s waterways.
- Mathematicians at Utopia Mechanicus indicated that a single cubic foot of wood could produce roughly 40-80 rolls of paper
